Microsoft AI CMO Andrea Mallard to Exit Amid Shift in Consumer Marketing Strategy

Andrea Mallard, Microsoft AI's chief marketing officer, will leave the company, staying on as an advisor until early next year as the unit reorganizes its consumer marketing.

Andrea Mallard, hired as chief marketing officer for Microsoft AI in January after a long stint at Pinterest, is transitioning out of the role and will serve as an advisor until early next year. An internal memo explained that she plans to relocate her family to Europe in August to be nearer to her ailing father, prompting her step back. Her departure aligns with a strategic overhaul in which Microsoft is consolidating consumer and business Copilot applications into a single app and moving Copilot marketing under executive Jared Spataro.

The company does not intend to replace the CMO position directly. Recent months have also seen AI unit CEO Mustafa Suleyman shift to a superintelligence team and the merging of various Copilot teams. Mallard's brief tenure included a Super Bowl ad and influencer collaborations, initiatives that began before her arrival.

Why it matters

The change highlights Microsoft’s effort to unify its Copilot AI offerings and reshape its consumer marketing approach.
