Microsoft makes predictive text in Word and Outlook opt-in by default

Microsoft confirmed that its predictive-text feature will be disabled by default across the latest versions of Word and Outlook on multiple platforms, including Windows, web, iOS, Android, classic Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac. While the capability to suggest words and phrases as users type will stay in the applications, activation will now require a manual opt-in via the settings menu. The change follows feedback that automatic suggestions can sometimes be disruptive.

Microsoft highlighted that the adjustment gives users greater control over their editing experience. The announcement did not clarify whether current users who have already enabled the feature will lose it or if the setting applies only to new installations. The shift mirrors similar opt-in approaches used by other firms, such as Google’s Smart Compose in Gmail.
