Microsoft MVP launches site cataloguing every product name change from Redmond

Microsoft MVP Loryan Strant has unveiled the Microsoft Rebrand Registry, a website that tracks the 158 historic names of 72 Microsoft products.

Loryan Strant, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, released the Microsoft Rebrand Registry, a searchable database listing 158 former names for 72 active Microsoft products. The resource aims to clarify the company's ongoing rebranding, which often confuses customers who still use legacy terms like DirSync or Active Directory instead of newer names such as Entra. Strant assembled the information using his own coding tools and a rigorous manual validation process, avoiding reliance on AI.

The site includes analysis showing that product names survive an average of two years and eleven months, and it identifies eight products that have undergone three name changes. Based on the timing of past renames, Strant predicts a higher likelihood of future changes for Azure App Service, Azure SQL Database, Azure DevOps, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service. Feedback from both Microsoft staff and community members has been positive, with many appreciating the documentation that Redmond does not officially maintain.

Why it matters

It provides a clear reference for users navigating Microsoft's constantly shifting product terminology.
