Mid-Norway electricity price spikes to highest Q3 level since 2010

Electricity prices in the Mid-Norway (NO3) region surged dramatically in the third quarter, reaching the highest level for that period since 2010.

According to NVE’s quarterly data, the third-quarter electricity price in the Mid-Norway (NO3) zone climbed sharply relative to the same quarter a year ago, marking the highest quarterly price since 2010. The rise was most pronounced in this region, although all price zones experienced increases. A new power line linking Aurland and Sogndal, operational since autumn 2025, expanded the capacity for power exchange between Mid-Norway and western Norway, narrowing the price gap with southern regions.

Experts note that a dry winter reduced water levels in reservoirs, limiting hydroelectric output, while higher prices in neighboring countries also pushed domestic rates upward. Hydro production fell to its lowest quarterly level in South-West Norway since Q3 2022, and overall net electricity export declined, with imports roughly matching exports during several weeks of the quarter. Consumption rose to 28.5 TWh, up 0.2 TWh from the previous year, with the largest increase observed in North Norway.

Why it matters

Rising power costs affect households and industry, highlighting supply constraints and market volatility in Norway.
