Midterm congressional races could curb Trump’s agenda if Democrats gain control

Analysts say the upcoming U.S. midterm elections may serve as a de-facto referendum on President Trump, with Democrats currently ahead in polls.

The fall congressional elections are being framed as a grassroots referendum on President Trump, whose approval ratings are described as low. All House seats and about one-third of Senate seats are up for grabs, and Democrats are leading in multiple polls despite the race’s overall competitiveness. A Democratic majority in the House would give the opposition control of committees, hearings and investigations, potentially stalling Trump’s legislative agenda.

Gaining the Senate would further empower Democrats to reject the president’s nominations and curb his policy moves. While Trump is not a candidate, his presence dominates campaign rhetoric, and the results will shape the balance of power for the remainder of his term.

Why it matters

The midterms will determine whether Congress can check the president’s authority for the next two years.
