Midterm US election could curb Trump and reshape Washington's Europe policy
Political scientist Vlad Bujdei-Tebeică warns that the upcoming US midterm elections may limit Donald Trump's influence and affect America’s relationship with Romania and the EU.
The US midterm elections are set to test Donald Trump's waning popularity, with one outlet/Ipsos survey indicating a 31% approval rating, the lowest across his two terms. Expert on political polarization Vlad Bujdei-Tebeică says Republicans risk losing one or both chambers because of their close association with Trump’s decisions. He points out that a Democratic surge would restrict Trump’s ability to set the legislative agenda and could lead to tighter scrutiny of his administration’s actions.
Although a change in congressional majority would not instantly reverse US foreign policy, it may provide European allies, including Romania, with stronger tools to demand accountability. Bujdei-Tebeică also highlights the potential for the administration to attempt various tactics to influence the vote, such as spreading fraud allegations or pressuring election officials, which could erode public confidence. The analyst stresses that Romania’s security and economic ties with the US depend on a predictable American stance amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Why it matters
The election outcome could alter US legislative power and affect Europe's ability to engage with Washington on security and policy issues.
