Midtown lawyer faces new 41-count indictment for seven-hour torture of woman

Attorney Ryan Hemphill was charged with an additional 41 counts after a woman reported a seven-hour ordeal involving a shock collar, waterboarding and threats in his Manhattan apartment.

Manhattan Supreme Court heard a fresh 41-count indictment against lawyer Ryan Hemphill, accusing him of torturing a woman for seven hours in his Midtown apartment. According to Assistant District Attorney Mirah Curzer, the victim was lured via the SugarDaddy dating app, then threatened with a knife, bound to a bed, burned, fitted with an electric shock collar and repeatedly submerged in a bathtub. Prosecutors say the perpetrator forced the woman to record a statement claiming she wanted to be raped, a claim they say the video disproves.

Hemphill, already serving time on Rikers Island on a 116-count indictment for similar assaults on six other women, denied the new charges. The case highlights alleged use of recorded footage as intimidation and claims of connections to law enforcement and organized crime. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the alleged acts as "absolutely horrific" and praised the survivor’s courage. The defendant appeared unfazed in court, greeting a photographer with a casual remark.

Why it matters

The case underscores severe sexual violence and abuse of power by a legal professional, raising concerns about victim intimidation and law-enforcement accountability.
