With the system still plagued by equipment breakdowns and severe staffing shortages, the Trump administration has invited Peter Thiel’s Palantir to fill the gap; the firm now powers much of the FAA’s data stack and is securing multiple no-bid contracts worth billions. Controllers argue that new funding, authorized by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, directs money toward software and AI tools while ignoring the urgent need for more personnel, a shortfall reflected in recent weather-related delays and cancellations.
