Midwest ATC outage underscores FAA woes and Palantir's expanding role

A two-hour radar and communications failure at the Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center on August 6 disrupted more than 1,100 flights, exposing lingering weaknesses in the nation’s air-traffic system after recent reform attempts involving Elon Musk’s DOGE and Peter Thiel’s Palantir.

On August 6 the Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center lost radar and communications for roughly two hours, grounding over 1,100 flights across a vast nine-state region. The glitch followed a separate incident on August 4 when pilots could not reach Reagan National Airport during President Donald Trump’s Marine One flight, leading to a near-miss with a commercial aircraft. The failures come after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy invited Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to overhaul the FAA, a promise that resulted in the termination of 400 FAA employees and no major technology upgrades.

With the system still plagued by equipment breakdowns and severe staffing shortages, the Trump administration has invited Peter Thiel’s Palantir to fill the gap; the firm now powers much of the FAA’s data stack and is securing multiple no-bid contracts worth billions. Controllers argue that new funding, authorized by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, directs money toward software and AI tools while ignoring the urgent need for more personnel, a shortfall reflected in recent weather-related delays and cancellations. Despite the influx of contracts, frontline staff report little tangible benefit, and concerns grow over burnout and high suicide rates among controllers.

Why it matters

The outage highlights systemic FAA problems and the growing influence of private tech firms on critical national infrastructure.
