Migrant-linked scooter gangs surge in NYC chain-snatching attacks, targeting police and civilians

Motorized-bike robberies, many linked to illegal migrants and the Trinitarios gang, have spiked in New York City, with dozens of chain-snatching incidents since September, some turning violent.

Since September, New York City has seen more than 20 robberies carried out by scooter-riding crews, many identified as members of the Dominican-origin Trinitarios gang and illegal migrants. At least ten of these attacks have escalated to violence, including a detective who was stabbed ten times after confronting two suspects earlier this month. Other victims have been punched, knifed or shot, with both civilians and police officers losing valuable jewelry.

Arrested perpetrators are frequently released on their own recognizance, a practice critics link to the city’s sanctuary policies. In one notable incident, Bronx resident Jorge Beltre was stabbed in the leg while protecting his 14-karat gold chain, and the teenage assailant was later released on $900 bail. Police say the robberies have prompted a temporary dip in chain-snatching incidents in the Bronx following the attempted murder of Detective Jose Mercedes, but overall crime remains a concern across all five boroughs.

Why it matters

The rise in violent scooter robberies highlights public-safety challenges tied to sanctuary policies and gang activity in NYC.
