Migrant youth gangs spread fear in Potsdam as attacks go unreported
Violent assaults by migrant-background youth groups have plagued Potsdam for nearly two years, with victims often staying silent out of fear of retaliation.
For almost two years, Potsdam has been under pressure from youth gangs, predominantly of migrant background, whose assaults range from street robberies to coordinated attacks on private homes. The latest incident in Kohlhasenbrück involved three teenagers, one of whom required several days in intensive care after severe injuries. Survivors and parents claim that perpetrators collect identification documents and threaten victims' families, leading many to avoid filing charges.
Reports also indicate that suspects are often detained briefly before being released, leaving victims waiting months for testimony. The violence has forced the closure of a local youth club after its staff received threats. In response, Brandenburg interior minister Jan Redmann announced tougher measures, including possible deportations, and the police have bolstered their presence while establishing the "Juventus" investigative team.
