Mild 3.3-magnitude quake rattles North Sea near popular Lincolnshire resort
A magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck the North Sea about 25 km off Lincolnshire, near the seaside town of Skegness, causing only faint tremors.
At approximately 1:04 pm, a shallow earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale occurred in the North Sea, roughly 25 km from the holiday destination of Skegness, according to the British Geological Survey. The quake originated at an 11-km depth and produced only slight vibrations, which were possibly perceptible in nearby coastal communities including Chapel St Leonards, Ingoldmells, Mablethorpe and Skegness itself.
Areas farther away, such as Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Boston and Hunstanton, were unlikely to notice the movement. VolcanoDiscovery reported a slightly higher magnitude of 3.4 and reminded that seismic values may be revised after further analysis. The tremor is part of a pattern of minor quakes in the UK, where the BGS logged 309 events last year, most too small to be felt, and larger magnitude-4 events occur only every few years.
