Miliband says US-Ukraine ties strained after Trump’s peace-deal comments

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband warned that relations with Washington have become difficult after Donald Trump suggested a new Ukrainian leader and claimed Vladimir Putin favours a peace deal.

At the Warsaw Security Forum, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband described the past few days as "very difficult" for relations with the United States following President Donald Trump’s remarks that Ukraine needs a new leader and that Vladimir Putin prefers a peace settlement. Miliband highlighted President Volodymyr Zelensky’s "extraordinary" leadership since Russia’s invasion and visited a site where 22 civilians, including five children, were killed.

He called for a comprehensive energy ceasefire, noting 200 Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in a single week, and urged Trump to pressure Putin on this issue. The UK pledged to work with the European Union on measures to channel frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. Miliband also warned that Europe must intensify its response to Russian hybrid warfare, including disinformation and cyber attacks.

Why it matters

The remarks signal heightened diplomatic friction that could affect Western support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
