Military Moves Toward Hybrid and Electric Vehicles as Batteries Challenge Oil Dependence
Armed forces worldwide are incrementally adopting hybrid and electric drivetrains, with China outpacing the United States, which is testing prototypes for future combat vehicles.
Petroleum still powers most militaries, but growing strategic and operational incentives are prompting a gradual move toward hybrid and electric platforms. Climate-related directives sparked early U.S. plans, yet recent wars in Ukraine and Iran have underscored the value of silent, high-power vehicles and the vulnerability of fuel supply lines. China leads the civilian market, with over 25% of heavy-truck sales electric in early 2026, and is translating that capacity into military hybrids, unveiling the ZTZ-100 medium tank and a forthcoming ZTZ-99A1 variant.
The United States is developing hybrid drivetrains for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, a heavy Infantry Squad Vehicle, and an M1E3 Abrams prototype released in 2026, viewing hybrids as a pragmatic bridge between fuel and battery benefits. To meet the massive energy demand of electric forces, the U.S. pursues transportable micro-reactors through Project Pele and the Janus Program, while China’s Fenglin Consortium is testing a vehicle-mounted 10 MW nuclear power bank. Remaining hurdles include battery resilience under fire, rapid charging in the field, and securing domestic supply chains, suggesting a mixed-energy future by the late 2030s rather than a rapid, full-electric overhaul.
