Millions Intended for Lewiston Shooting Victims Redirected to Unrelated NGOs
An investigation found that almost $2 million of donations meant for families of the Lewiston mass-shooting victims was given to unrelated Muslim and migrant activist groups.
Following the deadliest mass shooting in Maine’s history, the Maine Community Foundation was promoted by Governor Janet Mills as the trusted channel for public donations to aid the 162 family members of the 18 victims. However, a recent report shows that nearly $2 million of the $4.7 million raised was diverted to 29 local NGOs, including groups such as the Somali Bantu Community Association and Generational Noor, each receiving $65,522.
These nonprofits had no connection to the victims and were overseen by foundation board members who effectively approved the payouts. Some of the recipient NGOs have since ceased operations or appear to have been fictitious. A victim’s relative expressed shock upon learning the amounts, noting they far exceeded what families received. Attorney General Aaron Frey stated he lacks jurisdiction to investigate, and the state will not take action at this time.
Why it matters
It shows possible misuse of charitable funds meant for shooting victims, raising concerns about oversight and accountability.
