Minister Patrick O’Donovan denounces party colleagues for questioning his health

Patrick O’Donovan, Ireland’s minister for culture, communications and sport, called remarks by fellow Fine Gael members about his fitness a betrayal.

During a stop in Limerick ahead of an informal gathering of EU telecommunications ministers, Patrick O’Donovan defended his capacity to serve as minister for culture, communications and sport after a Fine Gael colleague questioned his health. He highlighted his recent hospital stay in Brussels and his long-term epilepsy, arguing that the criticism disrespected people living with more serious conditions. O’Donovan also addressed the fallout from a post-budget row in which his department secured extra funding but left one outlet broadcaster RTÉ short of the amount promised in a 2024 agreement.

He said he remains answerable to his constituents and would resign if he ever felt unable to continue. The minister stressed that the health debate was unrelated to his political performance and that ongoing RTÉ matters are being handled by officials.

Why it matters

The dispute reveals internal party tensions and raises public awareness of how health issues are politicized.
