Minister Tarr calls for comprehensive dialogue with churches amid growing mistrust

Minister Tarr Zoltán said the government aims to build a professional, respectful partnership with religious bodies, noting recent talks as a positive step.

At a panel held in the S4 Community and Cultural Centre, Minister Tarr Zoltán discussed the need for thorough consultations with Hungary's churches, describing recent conversations as a notable achievement after five months of limited contact. He pointed to a manufactured skepticism among many religious leaders toward one outlet government and a general public reluctance to engage with faith institutions. Tarr affirmed that the Tisza government intends to negotiate based on mutual respect, avoiding financial inducements or political interference.

Panelists Rubovszky Rita and Prőhle Gergely added that historical paternalism and recent demographic decline have deepened societal prejudice against churches, calling for self-reflection and strategies to reverse negative perceptions. The minister concluded that overcoming these obstacles is essential for churches to fulfill their social missions without constant majoritarian bias.
