Minister urges holistic strategy for Jakarta slum revitalisation and resident livelihoods

The housing minister emphasized that successful slum rehabilitation requires more than physical refurbishment, calling for an integrated approach that also boosts residents' quality of life. He cited the Menteng Tenggulun project in Central Jakarta, where roughly 150 houses were renovated alongside improvements to roads, waste-handling systems and the neighbourhood ambience. Economic empowerment is being pursued through mentorship from female bankers and the state-run micro-finance firm PNM for local micro, small and medium enterprises.

The minister stressed that continuous cross-sector cooperation is essential, as government alone cannot address the multifaceted challenges of informal settlements. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to provide subsidised housing options and to assist owners of uninhabitable homes via the Home Renovation Program.
