Ministers scrap clean-energy requirement from gas transition loan scheme days before launch
Just five days before the Gas Transition Loan scheme was to be announced, ministers removed the rule that borrowers must use clean energy sources.
The government had been developing a loan program to help firms replace gas with cleaner fuels. Minutes before its public launch, ministers eliminated the clause that forced applicants to switch to clean energy. Instead, the scheme now permits conversion to LPG, diesel or coal. Officials and banks had previously supported keeping the clean-energy condition, according to budget documents.
