Ministry launches volunteer squad to combat sexual violence on campuses
A government-backed programme called Skuad Waja aims to raise awareness and support victims of sexual harassment in higher education.
Police statistics reveal ongoing sexual safety concerns within tertiary institutions, prompting calls for continuous action. Authorities emphasized that addressing the problem requires knowledge of personal safety measures and ways to support victims properly. The ministry-established Skuad Waja programme, meaning Women Anti-Crime Squad, seeks to involve volunteers and the public in raising awareness and tackling violence against women.
It stresses that abuse can extend beyond physical assault to include intimidation, humiliation, emotional manipulation, financial control and sexual harassment. Participants are urged to use available help channels and understand their rights. As of September, the programme counted more than 340,000 volunteers across the country, with women comprising the bulk of the force.
