Minnesota mother perished after re-entering blaze to shield toddler
Bonnie Pierce died after returning to a St. Paul fire to protect her 3-year-old daughter, who survived with critical injuries.
On the afternoon of August 22, a blaze engulfed a duplex in St. Paul’s 700 block of Magnolia Avenue East. Bonnie Lynn Pierce, 38, was inside with her daughters Aurora, 12, and Grace, 3, when the fire started. Aurora managed to exit by pushing out an air-conditioning unit and slipping through a window, and Pierce also left the building initially.
After discovering that Grace was still trapped, Pierce re-entered the burning home and was later located by firefighters in a bedroom, covering the child with her body. Emergency crews lifted both victims out; Pierce was unresponsive and later died on August 24 from severe burns covering 48% of her body and oxygen deprivation. Grace was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to make a full recovery. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the St. Paul Fire Department.
