Minors accused of serious offenses released after courts cite shortage of IPPJ placements

A group of minors suspected of grave crimes were freed because there were no available spots in public youth protection institutions.

The public prosecutor had asked that several of the minors be placed in an Institution publique de protection de la jeunesse due to the seriousness of the alleged offenses. A youth judge reviewed the cases and determined that placement was warranted in multiple instances. However, the lack of available beds forced authorities to release the youths pending accommodation.

Why it matters

It shows how insufficient capacity in youth protection facilities can delay judicial decisions for serious juvenile cases.
