Mishra urges modern, data-driven statistics to steer India toward Viksit Bharat by 2047

Principal Secretary P K Mishra said India needs a modern, technology-enabled statistical system with granular data to support the Viksit Bharat vision.

At a conference organized by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister P K Mishra warned that India's statistical architecture must evolve to match its development ambitions for Viksit Bharat by 2047. He argued that reliable, granular data are a strategic asset that enable governments to track development, assess policies and allocate resources efficiently. Mishra urged tighter centre-state collaboration and the integration of AI, machine learning, satellite imagery and advanced analytics, but cautioned that speed must not compromise statistical quality, transparency or privacy.

He called on Mospi, state statistical offices, finance, planning and IT departments, NITI Aayog and academic institutions to build a trusted, interoperable system. The emphasis is on moving beyond national averages to detailed state and district-level metrics to guide future growth.

Why it matters

Accurate, detailed statistics are crucial for shaping policies that will drive India's long-term development goals.
