Misinformation spreads on X within an hour after FlyDubai knife attack and forced landing
A FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel-Aviv was forced to land after a pilot attacked a colleague with a knife; within 67 minutes, false claims about the incident began circulating on X.
FlyDubai flight FZ1073, en route from Dubai to Tel-Aviv, made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport after a pilot used a knife against another crew member, leading to his arrest. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the pilot's goal was to steer the aircraft into the ground. Within 67 minutes of the plane’s distress call, the first conspiratorial post appeared on X, claiming the event was a "false-flag" operation organized by Israel.
The Antiszemitizmus Kutatóközpont (ARC) tracked the surge, counting 1,000 posts in the first five hours and a total of 2,963 within twelve hours, all suggesting Israeli or Zionist orchestration. The analysis highlighted how swiftly a fabricated narrative can dominate the discourse, resembling patterns seen in Russian-linked campaigns aimed at destabilising Western societies. Experts warn that such pre-crafted misinformation can shape public opinion before factual reporting catches up.
