Missouri Deputy Attorney General Rescued After Six Days Missing on Wyoming Peak

Deputy Attorney General Shaun Mackelprang was located near Scott Lake after a six-day search following his disappearance on Gannett Peak.

Missouri Deputy Attorney General Shaun Mackelprang vanished while hiking in Wyoming’s Wind River Range after departing the Green River Lakes Trailhead on August 20. He summited Gannett Peak, the state’s highest point, but encountered severe thunderstorms and strong winds on the way down, becoming dehydrated and lost. A coordinated search involving the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office, its drone team, and Tip Top Search and Rescue’s helicopter located him near Scott Lake on the morning of his sixth day missing.

He was airlifted out, received medical attention, and returned to his loved ones. His brother Romel confirmed the conditions that led to the mishap, and Missouri Attorney General Catherine L. Hanaway expressed relief and gratitude for the rescuers. Mackelprang has served in the Missouri Attorney General’s Office since May 2021.

Why it matters

The rescue highlights the dangers of high-altitude hiking and the importance of coordinated search-and-rescue resources.
