Mitchell High cross country prepares for rebuilding season with new leaders

Mitchell High School's cross country program is entering a rebuilding year with few seniors and several promising underclassmen under coach Katie Buschbach.

With a large graduating class of eight varsity runners, Mitchell High School's cross country team faces a thin senior lineup this fall. Only senior girls Londyn Schroeder and Averi Gerfen remain, though Schroeder's season is delayed by an ACL tear sustained in basketball. Coach Katie Buschbach is counting on freshman Micah Bennett to anchor the boys' squad, noting his strong performance at last year's state meet.

Rising sophomores and other underclassmen such as Karsten Herges, Will Mullenmeister, and Kaiden Colomb are expected to contribute. The girls will rely on Gerfen's experience and Schroeder's return once she recovers. Early practices have emphasized cohesion, and the team will debut at the Mitchell Invite on Aug. 27 at Wild Oak Country Club.

Why it matters

Local athletes and coaches adjust to roster changes, shaping the community's high school sports landscape.
