Mitsotakis rides first renovated Line 1 train, flags full fleet overhaul

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis boarded the first of 14 refurbished Line 1 electric-rail cars, noting the line’s aging fleet and outlining a plan for modernised trains by 2027.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled on the inaugural refurbished carriage of Athens’ Line 1 electric railway, traveling between Thiseio and Moschato alongside Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Giorgos Kotsiriras and STASY managing director Thanasis Kottaras. He warned that the line suffers from “very old” rolling stock, calling the situation “highly problematic.” The plan calls for the delivery of 14 brand-new cars within the next twelve months, each featuring climate control, modern interiors, dedicated spaces for passengers with disabilities, new flooring, windows, seats and digital information displays.

The rail upgrade is one element of a wider effort to boost the capital’s public-transport capacity, including the addition of numerous new buses to increase service frequency. Mitsotakis linked these improvements to the city’s traffic-congestion challenge, stressing that stronger mass-transit options are essential for relief. Completion of the full refurbishment programme is targeted for 2027.

Why it matters

Upgrading the aging train fleet aims to improve reliability, accessibility and reduce traffic congestion in Athens.
