MK party in South Africa ousts eighth secretary amid pre-election turmoil
Jacob Zuma's MK party has dismissed its eighth general secretary in under two years as it heads into municipal elections, raising doubts about its stability.
Ahead of upcoming municipal elections, Jacob Zuma's MK party expelled its eighth general secretary, Sibonelo Nomvalo, after a brief tenure that began in March. The party alleged violations related to council selections, factional disputes, double payments, and unapproved committee appointments. Lindiwe Mtshali has been named the new secretary, working alongside MK chief executive Mxolisi Phakathi, who is also standing as a mayoral candidate in the eThekwini region.
Since its formation, MK has dismissed seven previous secretaries and recently removed two parliamentarians, a former police minister, a vice-president, and other senior figures. Analysts warn that the internal chaos could weaken the party's voter mobilisation in its stronghold of KwaZulu-Natal, though many supporters remain loyal to Zuma personally.
Why it matters
The leadership upheaval threatens MK's ability to compete effectively in South Africa's crucial municipal elections.
