MLB's draft plan to let top seeds pick playoff opponents draws fan outrage

Major League Baseball has unveiled a proposal that would let higher seeds choose their opponents in the Wild Card and Division Series, sparking strong backlash from fans.

MLB is considering a suite of structural changes, including a shortened 154-game regular season, Monday off-days, and a best-of-seven Division Series. The most contentious element would allow the No. 3 seed to select its Wild Card opponent and give the No. 1 seed the right to choose which Wild Card winner it faces in the Division Series, leaving the No. 2 seed with the remaining team. The league says the system would heighten the value of regular-season performance and boost fan engagement.

However, the proposal has provoked a wave of criticism, particularly from fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who feel the reigning champions would be unfairly advantaged. Implementation could begin in 2027, though MLB may pause the rollout while it assesses the backlash.

Why it matters

The plan could reshape playoff dynamics and affect competitive balance across Major League Baseball.
