MMA leader urges stricter safety and insurance after Sarawak helicopter crash kills health workers

On Sept 8, a BO-105 helicopter carrying five people crashed near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing Airport in Ulu Baram, Sarawak, resulting in the deaths of four health workers and the pilot. Speaking after the MMA National Convention in Ipoh, MMA president Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo said the tragedy should trigger a nationwide overhaul of medical transport safety standards. He called for systematic assessments of asset lifespan, maintenance records, safety certifications, emergency equipment, and suitability to terrain and weather, insisting no vehicle should be used merely because it is available or tied to a contract.

Rajoo also urged a review of the RM30 Air Health Service Incentive Payment, arguing it no longer reflects current risks, and advocated mandatory travel and personal accident insurance for all health workers on official duties, whether permanent or contract staff. He emphasized that the safety and welfare of medical personnel must be the top priority.
