Mobile imposes 7 p.m. curfew as Category-3 Hurricane Isaias approaches

Mobile officials will enforce a curfew from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday as Hurricane Isaias, a Category 3 storm, nears the Gulf Coast.

Facing the arrival of Hurricane Isaias, Mobile will place a general curfew in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday, limiting movement on city streets. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis asked residents to secure a safe place and remain there as conditions worsen, while city crews and public-safety personnel prepare for post-storm cleanup. The storm, now a Category 3 system with sustained winds of 120 mph, is expected to produce severe storm surge, rain and wind damage, especially east of Mobile County.

The National Hurricane Center has highlighted the risk of life-threatening surge along the Alabama coast and the Florida Panhandle. Governor Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 Alabama counties, and officials have halted commercial flights after 1 p.m. Friday. Residents can call 911 for emergencies, use 311 for city service issues, or contact the Mobile Police Department’s non-emergency line.

Why it matters

The curfew aims to protect Mobile residents from dangerous conditions as a major hurricane makes landfall.
