Modders Get Windows NT Running on Nintendo GameCube Hardware

Hobbyists have successfully installed the 1990s Windows NT 4.0 operating system on Nintendo GameCube consoles using a PowerPC build and custom hardware modifications.

A community of modders has managed to run Windows NT 4.0, the classic 1995/1996 PowerPC operating system, on Nintendo GameCube consoles. The initiative started when a new PowerPC build of the OS surfaced, prompting hobbyists to use the Entii for Workcubes code on GitHub, which leverages the similar hardware of the GameCube and Wii. The installation process involves stripping out the original disc drive, fitting a custom mod drive, and inserting an SD card hidden inside a GameCube memory card before completing the software setup.

YouTube creators emu_kidid, Jiga Tech, and Michael MJD have documented the procedure, with MJD demonstrating a game of Solitaire and Jiga Tech adding support for the ASCII keyboard controller and partial DK Bongo controller functionality. While practical uses are limited, the achievement showcases the technical depth of modern console-modding and reflects broader debates over tech ownership and game preservation. Nintendo’s aggressive anti-modding stance on newer hardware has pushed many enthusiasts toward older systems like the GameCube for experimental projects.

Why it matters

It shows how hobbyists can repurpose legacy consoles, raising questions about digital ownership and preservation.
