Modern smartphones let you safely charge overnight with smart features
Newer phones use adaptive charging to protect batteries, making overnight charging generally safe if heat is avoided.
Older guidelines suggested keeping phone batteries between 20% and 80% and unplugging them after reaching full charge to extend lifespan. Today, Apple’s Optimised Battery Charging, Samsung’s Sleep Time Protection, and Google Pixel’s Adaptive Charging learn users’ routines and adjust the charge rate, often stopping at around 80% before completing the charge near waking time. Some devices let users pick a maximum charge level—Apple from 80% to 100% in 5% steps, Samsung up to 95%, and Pixel 6a onward at 80%.
Despite these advances, high temperatures still degrade lithium-liquid liquid cells, so phones should not be covered or left in hot spots while charging. For most people, enabling the built-in smart-charging options makes overnight charging convenient without major battery wear.
