Moderna's mRNA flu vaccine cleared for adults 50+, pharmacies begin rollout

Moderna's mFlusiva, the inaugural mRNA influenza vaccine in the United States, obtained FDA clearance in August for individuals 50 and older—traditional approval for ages 50-64 and accelerated approval for those 65+. A Phase 3 trial involving more than 40,000 participants reported roughly a 27% higher efficacy than standard-dose flu shots, with mild to moderate side effects. The vaccine uses a genetic snippet to prompt immune response, can be produced in two to three months, and does not protect against Covid-19.

Pharmacies including CVS and Walgreens are beginning to stock the dose, though supply is limited early in the season. Private insurers are expected to reimburse the roughly $171 price tag, Medicare must cover it, while Medicaid coverage is still uncertain.
