Mokhzani says Sepang Circuit ready to host Formula One again

Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir stated that Sepang International Circuit has the capability and experience to stage a Formula 1 race again, but any return would depend on government approval and economic assessment.

At the Bahrain Grand Prix held at Sepang, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, head of the Motorsports Associations of Malaysia, said the Sepang International Circuit retains the expertise needed to host a Formula 1 event again if Malaysia receives the opportunity. He emphasized that while the circuit’s operational capability is intact, a permanent return would hinge on government endorsement and an evaluation of the race’s economic multiplier effect.

Mokhzani proposed a five-year "3+2" contract model to provide stability for spectators, teams and Formula 1 management. He pointed to the sale of 105,000 tickets for this year’s race as evidence of robust fan demand, noting crowds even for practice sessions. The official also mentioned that visitor spending would benefit not only the circuit but also hotels and tourism in Kuala Lumpur and beyond. The 2026 Bahrain GP at Sepang follows an agreement between Formula 1, the FIA and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain, keeping the Bahrain race on the calendar after a previous cancellation.
