Moldova's Finance Minister warns EU funds must be used efficiently for reforms

Moldova is undertaking sweeping economic and financial reforms aimed at aligning with European Union criteria, according to Finance Minister Victoria Belous. While the government has secured EU financing, Belous highlighted that delays stem from procedural inefficiencies rather than insufficient funds. She pointed out that upcoming public-sector wage hikes and tax reforms slated for 2027 require both stable income streams and capable institutions to execute projects.
The minister stressed that improving administrative capacity is essential for converting EU money into better public services. Without such reforms, the intended benefits of the funding risk being lost. Belous called the measures “draconian but necessary” to steer the post-Soviet state toward a European future.
