Moldova's President Says Union with Romania Would Boost National Security
President Maia Sandu told the Moldova Security Forum that unification with Romania could make Moldova safer, but such a move requires majority support.
At the Moldova Security Forum in Chişinău, President Maia Sandu asserted that Moldova would be more secure if it united with Romania, referencing the shared history dating back to the country's independence. She explained that many Moldovans support unification for identity, economic and security reasons, especially as regional threats grow. Nonetheless, Sandu stressed that any union must be decided by a clear majority of the population, a condition she said is not presently met.
Current surveys, she noted, show a majority favoring European Union accession instead. She argued that EU membership, while not a defence alliance, would still raise Moldova's security level. Sandu concluded by reiterating that the ultimate decision rests with Moldovan voters.
Why it matters
The president's remarks highlight a key debate over Moldova's future security and geopolitical alignment.
