Moldova says it will welcome additional Ukrainian refugees this winter
President Maia Sandu announced that Moldova is prepared to receive more Ukrainian refugees if the winter brings heightened hardship, and the government is building shelters at border crossings for potential drone attacks.
During a security forum in Chisinau, President Maia Sandu affirmed Moldova’s willingness to shelter additional Ukrainian refugees if the upcoming winter proves as severe as expected. She recalled that more than one million Ukrainians have crossed into Moldova since 2022, with roughly 100,000 settling there. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said Ukraine is better prepared than the previous winter but highlighted Russia’s bolstered drone and missile capabilities.
Former prime minister and current Presidential Special Envoy Dorin Recean explained that Moldova is aligning its logistics with Ukraine’s interconnected energy networks. The country has experienced repeated airspace violations and, after recent missile and drone incidents, announced plans on Oct. 7 to construct protective shelters at border crossings for guards and nearby residents. These measures aim to mitigate the risk of further Russian attacks during the cold season.
Why it matters
Moldova’s readiness to host more refugees and protect its borders affects regional stability amid the Ukraine conflict.
