Moldova to Automate Police Data Sharing with EU Member States
Moldova's parliament approved a law enabling automatic exchange of DNA, fingerprint, vehicle, facial image and missing-person data with EU countries.
Moldovan lawmakers have moved forward with a bill that creates an automated channel for exchanging police data with European Union member states. Approved in the second parliamentary reading, the measure received support from 71 deputies while 22 abstained. It authorises the transfer of DNA profiles, fingerprints, vehicle registrations, facial images and details of persons who are wanted or missing, either automatically or via formal requests between competent authorities.
Additional categories such as transport means, police records, travel documents, visas and declared stolen or counterfeit valuables are also included, along with driver-license information. The law aims to bolster prevention and investigation of cross-border crime and terrorism, and it incorporates mechanisms to interoperate with Europol and Interpol databases. The legislation will become active six months after its publication in the Monitorul Oficial.
