Moldovan government approves cross-border bridge and first highway segment with Romania

On Wednesday the Moldovan government ratified an agreement with Romania covering the construction and operation of strategic transport infrastructure, including a road bridge over the Prut River between the twin towns of Ungheni. Vice-premier Vladimir Bolea explained that the accord also provides for a joint border-control system to speed traffic flow. Financial responsibilities are split, with Romania funding the bridge and Moldova contributing to a roughly 500-metre highway link to road R16.

An additional five-kilometre highway segment will be built on Moldovan territory, funded by Romania. The ministries aim to finish the works by the close of 2030, and the European Union is contributing funding through its Connecting Europe Facility. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan praised the project as a historic step toward integrating Moldova into the European transport network.
