Moldovan man arrested in Russia over alleged plot to kill senior defence officer
A 21-year-old Moldovan, Nicolae Cociu, was detained in the Astrakhan region after Russian authorities said he tried to assassinate a high-ranking Ministry of Defence official.
According to the FSB, 21-year-old Moldovan citizen Nicolae Cociu was recruited by Ukrainian secret services in 2025 after responding to an online job offer. He received weapons and explosives training in Kyiv before being sent to Russia in June 2026 with orders to eliminate a senior Russian defence officer. Using a Makarov pistol obtained through a Discord message, Cociu traveled through Estonia and reached Saratov, where he bought camouflage gear and began tracking his target.
On the day of the assault in the village of Probuzhdenie, he fired at least six shots at General-major Nikolai Varpahovici, commander of the 22nd heavy bomber division; the general survived after hospital treatment. Cociu was apprehended while trying to exit the country and has been charged with attempted homicide and illegal arms trafficking. The investigation continues to identify any additional participants.
