Moldovan Socialists Move to Oust Central Bank Governor Anca Dragu
PSRM deputies Bogdan Țîrdea and Petru Burduja said they will draft a parliamentary motion to dismiss BNM governor Anca Dragu, citing monetary-policy shortcomings.
Deputies Bogdan Țîrdea and Petru Burduja of the Partidul Socialiștilor din Republica Moldova announced they are preparing a parliamentary draft to dismiss Anca Dragu, the governor of the Banca Națională a Moldovei. They point to a deterioration in inflation outlook and an increase in the base rate from 5% to 9% as evidence of flawed monetary policy. The Socialists also highlighted Dragu’s reported monthly remuneration of over 230,000 lei, arguing that pay should be tied to results.
While affirming the bank’s constitutional independence, they claim the move seeks greater responsibility for the institution’s decisions. The draft will be forwarded to the President of the Parliament for a plenary vote. The initiative follows a previous request to the Curtea Constituțională for clarification on the legal basis of dismissing a central-bank governor.
Why it matters
It could reshape Moldova's monetary policy and set a precedent for parliamentary oversight of the central bank.
