Money-laundering authority seizes assets linked to Pizza Fan and Choriateiko tax fraud cases
The Authority for Money Laundering ordered the freezing of assets belonging to suspects in the Pizza Fan and Choriateiko tax-evasion investigations, while safeguarding payroll accounts.
In response to two high-profile tax-fraud cases that have come to public attention, the Authority for Money Laundering moved to freeze the property of individuals implicated in the Pizza Fan and Choriateiko bakery scandals. The order, authorized by Charalampos Vourlitis, targets bank accounts, safe-deposit boxes and any other financial holdings tied to the suspects. To protect workers, the authority explicitly excluded any accounts used for paying wages, including those of Choriateiko staff, from the seizure.
This precaution is intended to avoid penalising employees who have no involvement in the alleged wrongdoing. The action underscores the agency's effort to secure potentially illicit funds while the probes proceed.
Why it matters
Seizing assets prevents suspected fraudsters from moving illicit funds while protecting innocent employees' wages.
