Monica Dolan stars in film exposing Tuam baby-home tragedy

Actress Monica Dolan leads the new movie The Lost Children Of Tuam, dramatizing Catherine Corless’s investigation into a historic Irish mother-and-baby home.

Monica Dolan, 57, portrays Catherine Corless in The Lost Children Of Tuam, a drama about the former mother-and-baby home in Tuam, County Galway. Corless’s research, published in 2014, revealed that the remains of 796 infants and young children were interred in a sewage system between 1925 and 1961, drawing global attention to the tragedy. Dolan explains that the film’s focus on an ordinary woman-turned-historian makes the historical injustice more relatable.

Produced by Liam Neeson and adapted from Dan Barry’s 2017 New York Times article, the story shows Corless confronting opposition from locals, the Irish government and the Catholic Church while meeting survivors seeking justice. The movie aims to spark conversation about the dark chapter of Irish history and begins its UK theatrical run on Friday.

Why it matters

The film brings widespread attention to a hidden chapter of Irish history and the lasting impact of institutional abuse.
