Monica Mares arrested after alleged break-in at elderly New Mexico homeowner's house
Monica Mares, previously convicted of incest, was taken into custody for an alleged burglary at a Clovis, New Mexico residence.
Clovis Police captured Monica Mares on suspicion of breaking and entering a house belonging to a 66-year-old resident who was out of town. Mares told officers she broke in because she lacked shelter and was affected by thunderstorm headaches. A neighbor observed the back gate ajar and a light in the laundry area, matching patterns from earlier incidents.
Virginia Pritchett, the homeowner’s best friend, said the same individual or group seemed to know how to undo the handyman’s lock work. Pritchett, who has known Mares for years, expressed frustration over the repeated crimes and is pressing charges, hoping the district attorney will seek institutional confinement. Mares, who has a history of legal troubles including a 2016 incest charge, is currently held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
