Montparnasse Tower owners choose modest renovation plan after costly project collapse

The owners of Paris's Montparnasse Tower have rejected a large-scale refurbishment and are now backing a simpler, cheaper alternative.

The newly formed council of co-owners for the Montparnasse Tower convened for the inaugural session and overwhelmingly voted against the previously planned extensive overhaul of the skyscraper. Participants agreed to shift toward a less complex and far cheaper renovation approach, aiming to avoid further delays and disputes. The outcome was welcomed by the mayor of Paris’s 15th district, who expressed disappointment over the abandoned plan after a decade of work.

A senior official hinted that earlier signs of trouble had been ignored. The meeting also saw the attendance of entrepreneur Xavier Niel, who is involved in the building’s ownership structure. The council’s new direction seeks to stabilize governance and prevent recurring conflicts among stakeholders.

Why it matters

The shift to a cheaper renovation could affect the skyline and commercial use of Paris's tallest building.
