Montreal police chief to brief public on racism probe at Station 39

Montreal police chief Fady Dagher announced a public briefing for Tuesday evening at city hall to address the scandal surrounding Station 39 in the Montréal-Nord borough. The police service disclosed that 16 officers are being investigated for alleged racist and hateful conduct during traffic stops involving Black and Arab individuals, leading to the disbanding of the patrol. The meeting, postponed from early July after an active-shooter incident, will be open to the public and streamed online, with a question period for pre-registered attendees.

Community leaders, including lawyer Dardia Joseph and human-rights advocate Fo Niemi, are pressing for concrete reforms, civilian command of the station, and an independent oversight body. So far, three officers have been suspended, three reassigned to administrative duties, and the rest transferred, while prosecutors have yet to receive formal requests for criminal charges.
