Moody's predicts modest leverage change for Fairfax after IDBI Bank acquisition
Moody's says Fairfax's leverage will only drop slightly after buying a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for about $5.6 billion.
Moody's reported that Fairfax's financial leverage stood at around 34% as of June 30, 2026, decreasing to 27% after removing non-recourse debt from its non-insurance units. The agency does not foresee a significant rise in leverage following Fairfax's acquisition of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for Rs 52,878 crore (approximately $5.6 billion). Fairfax will finance the transaction using holding-company cash, dividends, possible asset sales, and by contributing its interests in Go Digit Life Insurance, Go Digit General Insurance and IIFL Capital.
Moody's highlighted Fairfax's policy of maintaining at least $1 billion in cash and liquid assets, which it expects to continue. The purchase positions Fairfax as the majority owner of a diversified financial services operation in India's high-growth market, which Moody's views as a credit-positive development.
Why it matters
The deal expands Fairfax's presence in India's fast-growing financial sector without markedly increasing its debt burden.
