Moon jellyfish reveal surprising link between cell turnover and cancer suppression

Researchers used moon jellyfish to show that high rates of cell division can actually reduce cancer risk, overturning conventional expectations.

Scientists at Caltech developed a theoretical framework to assess how a cell's need to multiply relates to cancer risk, then validated the model using moon jellyfish. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, demonstrated that abundant cell proliferation can act as a quality-control mechanism, removing cells that might become cancerous. Conversely, limiting cell division caused neoplastic growths in the jellyfish.

Lead collaborators Lea Goentoro and John Doyle, together with former graduate student Anish Sarma—now a pediatric resident at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center—observed that the jellyfish remain highly resistant to cancer even after exposure to carcinogens. Their work highlights a potential universal “proofreading” process that could be leveraged in human cancer treatments.
