Moroccan Buyers Overtake British as Top Foreign Home Purchasers in Spain
In the first half of 2026 Moroccan nationals recorded more property purchases in Spain than British buyers, according to notary data.
Data released by Spain’s General Council of Notaries shows Moroccan buyers led foreign home purchases in Spain during the first half of 2026, with 4,960 transactions compared with 4,541 by British buyers. This gave Moroccans an 8 % slice of all non-Spanish sales, edging out the British at 7.3 %. The trend began accelerating in 2018 and has continued, with Moroccans also topping British buyers in early 2021.
Most Moroccan purchasers are Spain residents and tend to buy in regions such as Murcia, Navarre, La Rioja and Aragón, where tourism is less dominant. British buyers, many of whom are non-residents, still favor coastal hotspots like Andalusia, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. Moroccan buyers also paid the lowest average price per square metre, €801, far below the €3,948 paid by U.S. buyers.
Why it matters
