Mother faces trial for allegedly killing 3-year-old daughter in Athens sea

A woman accused of murdering her 3-year-old daughter, whose body was found in the sea off Palaio Faliro, began her trial on Monday.

The trial opened Monday for an Algerian woman accused of killing her 3-year-old daughter, Jenna, whose body was recovered from the sea near Palaio Faliro, a coastal suburb of Athens. She faces charges of intentional homicide committed in a calm state and dangerous bodily harm. Prosecutors presented evidence that the child had bruises and injuries suggesting abuse before being placed in the water, and that she was still alive when she entered the sea, leading to drowning as the cause of death.

The mother maintains that the child was already dead when she took her to the coast, describing the event as an accident. The court also heard that the mother dressed the toddler in clothing that hid the injuries and placed a white hat over her face. The proceedings focus on whether the death was a deliberate act or a tragic mishap.
